2006 VW Jetta TDI Headliner problems

The headliner is coming down shrinking and sagging on my 2006 VW Jetta

This is not just a problem with my car, but everyone I know with a VW built around 2006 has had the same headliner issues.

This car was purchased new from Schumacher North Palm 3720 North Lake Boulevard, Lake Park FL, 33403 (866) 578-5361

This car has always been serviced by them, it is not even paid off. They do not want to replace the headliner because of the miles on the car. Does the glue of the liner or fabric wear as the car travels over the road? OR is this a faulty product?

This is a well known widely reported issue that VW is ignoring and offering to do the repair at cost if at all.

After the pictures, I have posted links to many other reports on the Internet of the same problems.

Stay tuned, I am editing a video that I will be posting on YouTube of other people's cars and interviews with them...

This does not look so bad...

The right side looks worse...

Around the dome light...

More around the dome light...

Not my car, but is this what it will end up looking like?

Not my car, look familiar?

What can we do about this. My 2006 is doing the SAME thing.

My 2006 Jetta is doing the exact same thing. It's sad to know VW is ignoring this issue. I suspected mine was due to the heat where i live in Texas until i started researching.

Ours too, 2006. I have a coworker who ALSO had same exact problem however his VW dealer said they know about the issue, and after enough bugging his VW covered it. I may have to go to them..

I have a 2006 Jetta, I called the VW hotline and they ended up covering 100% of the cost even though my warranty didn't cover it.

My '06 Jetta is doing the same thing. I live in California. All the dealer would say is its due to heat.

Rich said...

HEAT!!! They bake cars to test them! So then they should not sell cars with defective headliners & glue in places that get got! Ask them what the approved operating temperature range is for the car? Did they issue a warning that you should not have a VW in California or Florida? Why is this not happening with every car out there? BECAUSE it is a defective product!!!

I have a 2006 Passat with the exact same issue. When I found out dealer repair cost is around $1100 and aftermarket repair shops want %550 I tried to scrap the deteriorating foam from the board and apply some headliner adhesive to keep it up. I'm losing the battle. It's falling everywhere.

I see some notes of promise here. I'll keep you posted of my efforts in dealing with this.

Update: I have an appointment scheduled tomorrow (11:00a - 9/16/11) with Momentum VW on Richmond Ave in Houston, TX. They are repairing two factory recalls, one for air bag connectors and one for s steering column issue. They are also providing an assessment of the headliner per instruction of VW Customer service. They said they will then be able to determine the assistance they can provide to remedy the headliner issue.

Update: At the suggestion of Yolanda with VW Customer Service (Case #: 110441487), I made an appointment with Derek, the Service Manager Momentum VW at 2405 Richmond Avenue Houston, TX 77098 at 11a on Friday, 9/16/11. Derek looked the car over and took pics with his iPhone of the falling headliner. He was pleasant to deal with, he mentioned that they have the Jetta Headliners in stock but not the Passat. He also mentioned that I would be without my car for a couple of days while the headliner was being replaced. As you can see there was a clear recognition of the problem. And the suggestion was they would take care of it like they are doing with the Jettas.

To my dismay I received a call from a VW Customer Service Rep who said that because my vehicle has so many miles on it that they would not be able to assist me. I found this to be a bit perplexing since it was Yolanda who gave me the case number and who knew the mileage on the vehicle because she asked for it. So if mileage had been the reason why did they send me to the local dealer for evaluation. Anne a Customer Service Supervisor (who said to use my case # to identify her) called me this morning, 9a, 9/20/11, to reiterate their position that due to the mileage (202,080 approx.) they wouldn't help. But when I pressed her about the repairs they're making to the Jettas, she said they're making those assessments on a case by case basis. I explained that was as I expected but when I mentioned how I was advised to make an appointment and the disposition of Derek the service manager she said she apologized for having been misled that they would offer some assistance.

I went on to further explain that my family has been buying VW since the 70's, and that I have personally had, 81 VW Pickup Diesel, 2000 Jetta TDI, 2001 Jetta TDI, 2003 Jetta TDI, 2004 Passat TDI, 2006 Jetta GLI, 2006 Passat (the one I'm having the headliner issues with) 2007 VW EOS, 2010 Jetta TDI.

I mentioned that there are numerous vehicles in the parking lot from a variety of manufacturers where I work that are older and have even more miles on them and none of them are suffering a headliner failure.

After all of this Anne (Case #110441487) said they had to make a business decision. I stopped her and thanked her for her honesty and explained that this is not a wise business decision. Social media has empowered the average person with a voice and that they would be wise to reconsider because this problem isn't one I created and is clearly a defect they acknowledge.

This will come back to haunt them.

Anne did say she could offer me a discount toward the lease or purchase of a new VW. I almost laughed except that I was offended.

There's a reasonable conclusion from all of this so far. If you have a 2006 Jetta, insist that they provide you the repairs they are clearly providing to others. If you are a 2006 Passat owner with headliner failure, contact me so we can build a case for this model as well. You can reach me via email at randallsnyderjr@gmail.com.

I got online to find out what to do about my 06 Jetta headliner. It had started to shrink and pull away from the edges as well which I noticed about 2 years ago. I didn't it was a big deal until this week when it actually has fallen and is blocking a good portion of my back window. I was shocked to find so many reports of the same thing happening to so many other VW Jetta owners! I'm in Houston and it is hot and humid. However I haven't noticed this problem in any other car we own. Any suggestions where I should start asking about repairs in Houston would be great! Thanks

You just need to share with your dealer that the repairs are being made for others at no cost. I set up this page with more information about my experience and information you may find particularly useful for getting your repairs.

Let's make it easy - for help with customer service, you can either email or call ... current Volkswagen Credit account, feel free to contact us at 1-800-428-4034

NOTE: YOU WILL BE BLOCKED BY THE ADMINISTRATORS OF THE VW PRODUCT PAGES IF YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT THEIR PRODUCT. THEY ONLY WANT PRAISE AND ARE ELIMINATING CRITICISM. VW could be a great car company but they will fail to become a great car company if they abandon their customers. Buyer beware that they are selectively choosing to address defective headliners on 2006 models when the problem should be handled uniformly so that all customers are treated fairly. http://www.facebook.com/pages/VW-Defects-Headliners-Falling-etc/265600293471274

I called VoA too and after using a few key words, finally received a case # and was told to contact my dealer for a diagnosis appt. They got me right in on a Sat. but word back from VOA is that they will only cover 40% of the estimated $800. I have not been able to reach VOA since my rep(s) are always out of the office when I call/return their calls. We'll see; but I have not given up. We have "right" on our side....

I am about to buy an '06 Jetta that has this headliner problem. I'm getting the impression that it would need to be replaced and not repaired, right? Would I receive any help from VWoA or my local dealership if I wanted to get in on the list of people they've helped to repair this? I was getting this for my 16 yr old daughter as her first car, and was told by the dealership that took the car as a trade-in that it would cost me about $180 to "fix" the headliner. I'm gathering that this is not true. The car has 82K miles on it. What would be your advice to me? Jon

I have heard a varied range or repair costs but what I have found typically in my own search is $500 and $1100 by headliner repair shops and a dealer replacement, respectively.

My nephew seems to have been able to have some luck with a repair where he is on the MS coast for a couple hundred bucks but I haven't seen it with my own eyes.

I have the same problem and don't know what to do - it is a 2006 VW Jetta and we live in Delaware.
Asked my husband if it was the heat and he said he never saw anything like this - it wouldn't be the heat.

Does anyone else have seams splitting on leather seats at the seam?

Anyone have leather peeling off?

A Headliner repair kit is such an integral tool to have with you. The kit is more important especially when your car ages. This is because the headliner is more likely to fall off as your car ages. The factors that provoke the headliner to fall off include: heat, humidity, and time. The kit helps you to easily repair the headliner as soon as it falls off. When buying the headliner, you should ensure that it contains all the necessary tools. Some of the tools that you should ensure that they are in the kit include: adhesive, scalpel, gloves, headliner fabric, and scrubbing brush. You should also ensure that you buy the kit from a reputable store.

First VW car and last one, 4 years tiguan 2009 and headliner fall completely, called vw of america, they are not going to fix, saying after 3 years you are on your own, they will take a note to see if there is an issue on this specific car to fix for future models, commented found lot of complains online about same problem since 2005 on almost all vw models, oh well, leaned to late, looking for bmw, better warranty, quality and very similar price, tiguan price 28.3, bmw x1 29k, bye VW

My dark blue 2006 Jetta TDI has the same problem - completely pulled away from rear window area and causing rear view obstruction. Also completely pulled away from rear dome light assembly, and from the rear and sides of the front dome light assembly. VW customer service only offered $750 voucher toward purchase of new car, but said since the car was outside of warranty, they would not offer to help repair the issue. Clearly a case of inadequate climate control testing by VW.

It's been interesting reading the comments here. I own a VW Rabbit,'09. The headliner has pulled away in multiple areas. Called VOA Customer Care. They took info on the car and directed me to take it to the dealer I purchased the car new from which I did. They (she actually, Nina) called me today and refused to do anything because the car was no longer under warrantee. I calmly pointed out that this is not a moving part and shouldn't fail after just over four years. I'm going to pursue this via a TV investigation (WSVN, Ft. Lauderdale); no guarantees but I'm going to try. Would like hear from some of you.

my 2007 Jetta is doing the same thing.

I ended up taking mine to an auto upholstery place - they put in a totally new headliner for $400 (no sunroof). Nice job, even matched color - and I specifically told him I did not want him to order materials from VW. He did not have to take out any seats, so no resetting of electrical stuff required. I'm happy with the result - just not that I had to fork out the $400.

My 2007 GTi headliner has also failed and my dealer has been giving me a run-around arguement for over a year now.
I just talked to VWoA and they said it is not covered due to out of warranty issue.
Never mind that it started while the car was under warranty.
Never mind that the Internet is full of VW's having the same issues.
Never mind that they will loose customers.
I guess I'm going to fix it myself and buy a new Mazda next year.

Thumbtacks to the rescue! Just Watch out when the fall out on the seat (ouch). I have 100 thumbtacks holding up my headliner in a VW CC 2009.

Headliner began sagging on my 2006 VW Passat 3.6L Sport. Volkswagen owners have said its a combination of high temperatures in Naples, FL and headliner that was designed inches too short.

I love my car and is in very good condition in 2015 despite the headliner. Anyone know of a reasonable Volkswagen Passat Headliner Replacement or Repair option?

My 2007 beattle is also having this issue. They are telling me it is out of warranty, and too bad. I will continue my fight. My bug was my lil dream car, and only has 68,000 miles. I am from the Chattanooga area where the plant is located. I intend to go to the media with this issue. I will not buy another product from them.
